The eighth generation of the Audi A6 is here. This new saloon is updated following in the footsteps of its big brother, the all-powerful Audi A8, and will be presented next week at the Geneva Motor Show. Although Audi has not yet announced a specific date, we know it will be on sale throughout this year 2018.
As usual, the Audi A6 2018 is committed to an elegant design, luxury and great comfort, but without neglecting the features and especially the technology, highlighting the digitalization of the passenger compartment and the fact that the entire range of engines – a TFSI and three TDI – now incorporates a 48V electrical system in an effort to reduce consumption and emissions. They promise up to 0.7 liters less every 100 kilometers.
The body of the new Audi A6, made of steel and aluminum (the latter in doors, bonnet, trunk lid, etc …), is 6 millimeters longer than in the previous generation, for a total of 4.94 meters, as well as 12 millimeters wider and 2 millimeters higher.
The exterior color palette includes 15 options, eight of them new, in addition to the design and sport design lines , and the S-Line package. Audi offers for this new generation of the A6 tires up to 21 inches and three different types of front optical groups, the HD Matrix LED being the most advanced of the offer.
The manufacturer of Ingolstadt seems to be especially proud of the aerodynamic work, since they have achieved a coefficient of aerodynamic of 0.24 CX (in the most efficient version). As a result, the air noise that reaches the passenger compartment is also much lower.
Mild-hybrid solutions in all engines
In this new generation of the saloon of the house the entire range of engines is electrified, as they incorporate the technology mild-hybrid (MHEV), whose main protagonist is a 48-volt electrical system in the V6 and 12-volt propellers in the four-cylinder. In both cases an electric motor works as an alternator and starter motor, associated with a lithium-ion battery.
The offer of engines has a TFSI of gasoline and three TDI diesel, with powers of between 204 and 340 HP, and figures of torque that move from 400 to 620 NM. In any case, only automatic transmissions are available in the range. There are no manual gearboxes in sight. For its part, the only gasoline is a 3.0 TFSI V6 turbocharged 340 hp and 500 NM.
The diesel is a 2.0 TDI four-cylinder with 204 hp and 400 NM (A6 40 TDI), and a 3.0 TDI V6 that can have either 231 hp and 500 NM (A6 45 TDI), or 286 hp and 620 NM in the top end variant. Both V6 diesel are combined with the eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission (next to a central self-locking unit), while both the gasoline and the four-cylinder TDI are associated with a S-Tronic seven-ratio case. In addition, all V6 blocks, gasoline and diesel, equipped with quattro all-wheel drive.

On the other hand, the suspension has been redesigned (there are four options: conventional with steel springs, sports suspension, with hardness control and adaptive pneumatics), a directional rear axle is incorporated (with a rack capable of turning the wheels up to 5 degrees, reducing the turning diameter of the A6 by 1.1 meters) and the direction of variable reduction can move between 9.5:1 and 16.5:1 as a function of speed.
Audi says that the driving modes of the Audi A6 now change the character of the car more obviously and, in addition, the start-stop system operates between 7 and 22 km / h and the function of circulation to sail is available between 55 and 160 km / h.
Wide interior and loaded with technology
Audi also says that the interior of this new A6 is significantly wider than before, being a reference in space for the legs in the rear seats. The sliding glass panoramic roof, which is optional, can also contribute to this sense of spaciousness. The front seats promise multiple adjustments and are available with ventilation and massage.
The Audi A6 equipped a 10.1-inch multimedia touch screen on the dashboard with MMI Touch operating system, but does not leave behind the traditional, thanks to leather upholstery or moldings in open pore wood. Optionally, with MMI Navigation plus, both the digital virtual Audi cockpit 12.3 inches and a lower screen in the 8.6-inch console are added.
The trunk volume, meanwhile, remains identical to the previous generation (530 liters), although now the cover can be opened electrically and through the “hands-free” function, with a simple leg gesture.
Among the most interesting options, the brand highlights the “air quality” package with a special anti-pollution filter, ionizer and subtle fragrances, Head-Up Display, Bang & Olufsen sound system, windshield wipers with integrated water ejectors, heated front window, two types ambient lighting (with 30 colors to choose from), connected services Audi connect, digital key NFC (Near Field Communication) or a lot of driving assistants.
Among the latter stand out the parking attendants Audi parking pilot and Audi garage pilot, adaptive cruise control with lane maintenance, crossing assistant or predictive assistant (efficient driving suggestions). Depending on the equipment, this new A6 can equip up to five radar sensors, five cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors and a laser scanner.
