Height – the height of a tree at full growth should be checked before planting. The taller the tree the longer the roots will be. Equally the taller the tree, the more they are going to bend and sway in windy weather. You should ensure that you keep your trees to a reasonable height and that you check that there are no broken branches after a bout of windy weather.

Roots – the roots of a tree can spread as wide as the canopy in and in some cases even further so it is important to know how big the tree could be when it reaches maturity. Roots can also be incredibly strong and there have been instances where they can penetrate small cracks in drainage pipes. This is due to the fact that all plant roots will seek out areas of water. If you have damaged drainage pipes you might want to consider talking with a Drain Lining company who can help out with some repairs.

Leaves – as well as knowing how tall and wide your tree is going to grow you should find out whether it is a type of tree that will lose its leaves or whether it is an evergreen. In the case of deciduous trees, they will shed their leaves during the autumn and winter. This can cause a slip hazard, especially during icy days or after it has been raining. You should ensure that you clean up any leaves from walkway areas as soon as possible to help prevent accidents from happening.

Pests and Diseases – there are a number of pests and diseases that can affect trees. In some cases, these can be treated and in other instances, it may require the tree to be cut back or removed completely, This should always be done following advice from a tree specialist. Certain conditions such as Dutch Elm Disease and Ash Die-back need to be dealt with in specific ways.

Now you are aware of some key ways to maintain your trees you can go about enjoying their beauty in your garden.
