Wedged in the middle of the Balkans, the Republic of Macedonia is the great unknown that hides great wonders that are becoming a new tourist destination. Surrounded by Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Albania and Kosovo hides great treasures that are attracting crowds of visitors looking to history, nature and gastronomy. Part of the former Yugoslavia until its independence in 1991 is a blend of civilizations in what we might call a crossroads of East and West. Very mountainous, with spectacular rivers and national parks are also full of culture because of their constant invasions and occupations by Persians, Romans and Ottoman Turks. Archaeological Museum – Skopje
Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and enter many places to visit is its magnificent archaeological museum, located next to an imposing stone bridge. In it we can find gems like playing the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great and the reconstruction of a Roman chariot of the second century.
Skopje – Orthodox church of San Clemente
This Orthodox Cathedral of San Clemente in Skopje dating from the late twentieth century keeps inside a wonderful golden altar filled with icons. It is today the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
Macedonia Square – Skopje
It is the central square of the capital of Macedonia and the country’s largest. It is the place where cultural and political events are held here and was declared the country’s independence.
Restaurant Pelister – Skopje
Of course, you cannot miss a visit to an iconic restaurant in full Macedonia square. It’s wonderful terrace covered by metal and glazed arches is an ideal place to sit, eat, and watch people place. It belongs to Hotel Pelister.

Ohrid
Declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980, Ohrid is a real cultural and natural pearl. It is beside the lake of the same name and its old town is a real treat for the senses, being one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Its first mention dates back some Greek documents of about 353 BC and the lake is about more than 3 million years.
Lake Matka
The Canyon and Lake Matka, located on the outskirts of Skopje is the natural environment par excellence of Macedonia, the perfect destination for those who enjoy hiking, water sports or just sit and watch the grass grow. If you catch, a boat can access the Vrelo cave, considered one of the deepest in the world.
Jance
Located in the middle of the National Park Mavrovo is Jance is a picturesque mountain village of fewer than 200 inhabitants where you can find a mosque and an Orthodox church and for centuries the Turkish, German and Italian emigration left a deep mark on this earth.
Ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis
Two kilometers from the center of Bitola are the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis a city that once belonged to ancient Greece. Its foundation is due to the father of Alexander the Great and reached its peak at the time of the Roman conquest, as it was in the route of the Via Egnatia, which crossed from west to east the Balkan Peninsula towards Asia. Many of its Byzantine mosaics are preserved basilicas.
