How to style knitwear

Knitwear is a wardrobe staple but can sometimes be tricky to style, especially in particular seasons of the year. There has never been a better time to throw on some knitwear, so here are some style tips.

‘Quiet luxury’ doesn’t have to break the bank

Gwyneth Paltrow caused a sensation in 2023 while attending court in Utah. But it wasn’t the star’s testimony that set tongues wagging, it was her clever and understated style that coined the ‘quiet luxury’ aesthetic, and her knitwear pieces most of all.

To rock quiet luxury, opt for soft knitwear in muted tones in mohair or cashmere that give a timeless look. A soft cream like Paltrow wears, like those from shoparan.com/mens-aran-sweaters/mens-fisherman-sweaters/, will set off a tan nicely and, when paired with dark browns and greens, alludes to 90s glamour. When accessorising the quiet luxury look, try a simple set of loafers and small pieces of understated gold jewellery.

Style sustainably

Natural fibres like pure wool are more sustainable than non-natural fibres. Also, the closer the wool is brought to where it is made will reduce its carbon footprint even further.

Check the labels carefully and avoid anything that says it’s made of polyester or acrylic. While many high street shops offer knitwear items that feel luxurious in-store, they will not wash well and will also release microplastics into the ocean when washed.

Man-made fibres are also not breathable or moisture-wicking like natural fibres tend to be. Traditionally, this is why textile-making communities opted for natural fibres like wool when making socks or a mens fisherman sweater, because wool is breathable and moisture-wicking, as well as warm and versatile.

Be unique

By buying certain products that have strong links and provenance to their local landscape, you support local communities and heritage. This is one way that you can look fashionable while wearing knitwear and also stand out from the crowd. Hand-made wool items made from rare breeds of sheep will be unique, high quality and beautiful – the very definition of ‘quiet luxury’!
