Getting the box sizes right for your products can save you money, protect them better and use less filler material.
Measure Your Product Carefully
Measuring up your products for the right-sized boxes is crucial for saving money, reducing damage and cutting down on wasted filler materials. It’s worth measuring up the length, width and depth of your items, then adding on around 10-15mm to each of the dimensions for the padding clearance.
Know Internal Versus External Dimensions
Note that suppliers quote the internal dimensions of the boxes i.e. the dimensions of the cardboard walls. You need to add a few mm on each side (i.e. length, width and height) for the padding clearance.
Avoid Excess Void Space
Space in boxes is bad. It means more void fill which means more material which costs money. The less space in boxes the better. A well packed box needs little protection. Sometimes just a thin layer of paper wrap or a piece of crumpled kraft paper is enough.
Consider Weight and Stacking
Heavy items are best packaged in a heavier weight board than the size of the item would normally dictate. For posted packages, check the maximum dimensions and weight for each size of parcel allowed by services such as Royal Mail.
Try Custom Sizes When Stock Boxes Don’t Fit
Of course, custom made cardboard packaging products are made to specific sizes for the product to fit perfectly inside.

Test Before You Bulk Order
Order a small batch of your chosen size to test them out. Properly pack a few products up in the box and then drop it or shake it. If it passes the test then you can commit to a large order of them.
All of this will help you to get the size of the carton correct the first time in order to avoid having to order more boxes later on that are not suited to the products that you are sending.
