Teen birthday party planning is pretty much a tug-of-war between wanting it to be cool, but not too little kiddie. In fact, the best way to avoid cringe is by having an activity that has options but great vibes.
1) Let them choose the format
Offer 3 solid options:
Movie night and snacks
Activity Party (Bowling, Bouldering or Escape room)
Chill hangout (pizza, music, games)

2) Be Realistic with the guest list
6 – 12 real people, not a huge group with awkward plus-ones. You will ask them who they legitimately want there and ONLY invite that number.
3) Get the food right (everything else pales into insignificance compared to this if you get it wrong)
Opt for the crowd-pleasers that they can munch on with or without cutlery like pizzas, tacos, sliders and loaded fries or a build your own nacho bar. So throw in a couple “nice” drinks like mocktails, or soda – instant hit!
4) Fancy settings with minimal decoration
Skip character themes. Clear fairy lights, simple balloon clusters in two colours and a neat snack table. Which is fine to take pictures but nothing too juvenile.
5) Choose one thing, not a list of things to do
A playlist, a photo corner, a tournament (Mario Kart, Just Dance,) or short challenges keep things going.
6) Be present but not hovering
Establish parameters (noise levels, security; hours of drop off and pick up), then leave them be.
