A roof valley is simply the spot on your home where two slopes meet, which means it gets a lot of rainfall. Roof damage caused by something that moves, cracks, or becomes clogged is a reaction of the water regime as it strains so much through this one area, and valleys will be the first obvious places to show these problems.
What is a roof valley?
The gutter is a shallow trough down the side of the roof, typically formed in V. The rainfall from both sides of the roof enters the valley and drains down through the gutter. Roof types can vary, but valleys are often completed with lead flashing, a metal valley trough, or formed tile systems.
Why do valleys leak?
Clogged with debris: leaves and moss bedding down so that water sits under the tiles.
Splitting or loose flashing: lead and metal can crack, slip up, or simply become old.
Cracked or damaged tiles near the edges: Tiles at valley points are especially vulnerable under heavy weather.
Nail fatigue and movement: Minimal roof shifts can create gaps at joints.
Mastic (quick-fix sealants) and patch repairs can fail after a freeze-thaw cycle.
Valley Repair
Sometimes it’s just re-securing sections, but if it has become worn out or corroded, the valley lining will need to be replaced. For Roofers Bristol, visit mogfordprescott.co.uk/roofers-bristol
While a damp patch upstairs, staining near a chimney breast, or dripping after heavy rain may have previously been written off as some passing phase, if you notice similar symptoms today, get that valley checked early; it’s generally cheaper before water spreads.
