Installing a sign at a business requires more than just a drill and some common sense. Here’s how we typically work to install a sign at a business in a step by step format.
Site Survey and Fixing Points
Before any drilling occurs for the fixing points of a sign, we conduct a full site survey of the area where the sign will be fixed to walls and note any cables or pipes behind the surface of the walls.
Surface Preparation
Masonry and render need cleaning to a smooth face and may require plugging with the appropriate rawlplug type for the substrate type. Timber fascias need to be primed prior to drilling to form a watertight seal around the drill holes.
Lifting and Positioning Safely
Bigger signs can need a second pair of hands, a scaffold tower or even a cherry picker. Anyone working above two meters in height must adhere to safe working at height methods and ensure that any platform or working surface is stable and that they are correctly harnessed. Fixing and Fastening
Stainless steel bolts or aluminium stand-offs are commonly used to fix signs outdoors. Metal cladding signs will typically require the use of self-drilling tek screws or bonded fixings as standard masonry anchors would not provide an adequate fixing.
Sealing After Fixing
Once the sign has been fixed to the site, all entry points will then be sealed with a bead of silicone sealant to prevent water running down the back of the sign and causing staining or corrosion.
Alignment and Visibility Check
The sign is checked to read level from the best viewing position. For an Exeter sign this would be from both ends of the street to ensure it is visible from the best viewing position.
